Its historic buildings and museums also house a wealth of art - from medieval paintings, Old Masters and iconic 20th-century artists to the latest in contemporary works. In Art for Travellers Prague, Deanna MacDonald, an art historian and Globe Travel contributor, leads the reader along seven "art trails," complete with detailed maps, with suggestions for viewing art and architecture, both indoors and out. A valuable companion for travellers to Prague."

It is no exaggeration to call Praha (Czech for Prague) one of the most beautiful cities in the world; few places possess such atmosphere and history, such magnificent art and architecture. Part of its allure comes from its extraordinarily eclectic layers: a single vista can encompass soaring Gothic turrets, voluted Baroque gables, colorful Art Nouveau mosaics and jutting Cubist facades. Its museums and galleries hold masterpieces from medieval paintings to the latest in contemporary art, and many are found in buildings as fascinating as their collections.
This guide introduces travellers to Bohemian art and architecture in and around Prague, a world until recently little known beyond the Czech borders. Art for Travellers Prague provides a fascinating art historical context, explaining history, styles, patrons, and artists to give a sense of Prague’s artistic development and character, as well as a taste of the post-modern mix of the contemporary city. Easy-to-follow trails lead through different sections of the city and nearby towns, pointing out and discussing outstanding art, architecture, galleries, and museums along the most evocative and interesting routes.
Deanna MacDonald first went to Prague in 1990 and spent three years living there, where she earned an MA in art history at the Central European University’s Prague campus. She has a Ph.D. in art history from McGill University in Montreal, where she now lives. Her writing has appeared in the Toronto Globe and Mail, Montreal Gazette, and the Los Angeles Times.
